5 Reasons to Use Creativity as Self-Care

We live in extraordinary times, and regardless of one’s particular political persuasion, we live in a state of uncertainty.

Challenging doesn’t begin to describe the emotional depths people feel right now; high or low. This newsletter isn’t meant to be political, but given the state of our country, it’s impossible to ignore. At least for me. That said, I believe creative expression helps. Art reminds us that we’re capable of producing beauty.

Listed below are a 5 reasons to pick up a pen and unleash your creativity.

  1. Engaging the Mind: Art focuses on colors, sounds, words, shapes, and textures, absorbing us in something tangible and reducing stress.

  2. Flow State: When we’re fully absorbed in creating, we enter a state of "flow" where time feels suspended. This detachment from daily worries can bring a sense of calm and even joy.

  3. Emotional Expression: Art allows us to channel complex feelings into a physical form. This process can feel like a release, making it easier to process emotions indirectly and gently.

  4. Play: Approaching creativity playfully can lift the mood and remind us of simpler, joyful feelings.

  5. Art as a Safe Space: Art becomes a personal sanctuary, a place where we can be ourselves without judgment or pressure, offering a mental and emotional breather.

Playing with art in any form offers a mental and emotional escape, which can be deeply restorative. Using creativity for self-care is a healthy and inspiring initiative.

Pick up a pen. Take a class. Splash some paint. Snap a photo or two. Write some words. Let yourself go and see how it feels.
