How a Journaling Practice Can Boost Creativity and Benefit Mental Health
As a kid, I received a green diary with a gold lock and key for my birthday. Score! I loved having the space to place my thoughts, even if I didn’t understand them. A journal can be a personal diary with a gold lock and key, but it can also be a keeper of poetry, an ode to a loved one, an artful journey, a record of travels, serve as an offering of gratitude, a beginning to a book, and so much more.
Don’t let anyone tell you what a journal should or should not be.
Journaling serves as a stress release and helps a person process deep emotions. It can provide clarity and problem-solving. When a person journals, they move dark thoughts out of their head and onto the page. All of this helps one’s mental health. That said, journaling can also be a space to play and unleash wild creativity.
How does one begin?
Buy a journal or staple papers together and create your own. Nothing fancy is required.
Use a colorful marker or crayon to write your name on the opening page.
Find a writing prompt below or online and write for 5 minutes.
Doodle.
Write how you feel (use a timer if that’s helpful).
Splash ink on the page.
Tape a photo into your journal.
Brainstorm ideas.
Create a wish list of places you want to visit.
Copy or cut out quotes that resonate with you and tape them in your journal.
Play! Cry! Create! It doesn’t matter- it’s YOUR journal.
