Life List

On June 22, my mom died. It’s been a challenging, heart-breaking time. Mom lived 93.5 (exactly) years. I believe that although the rest of us weren’t ready, she was. Mom died a day after being honored for launching a chapter of the Boys and Girls Club in her small community. My brother, all of Mom’s friends, and many kids came to celebrate ten years of a successful club. Three hours after my brother left, she had a heart attack and died. Mom was home on her farm, underneath a beautiful maple tree filled with her beloved birds.

I had the good fortune to talk with Mom about life and death. Not long ago, she shared a list of life lessons with me. I read them at her memorial. I hope they inspire you (and your creativity).

Quotes to Remember

Mom loved her garden, good books, and an interesting conversation, so these quotes seem most appropriate.

This outward spring and garden are a reflection of the inward garden.
— Mevlana Rumi
Oh, words are action good enough, if they’re the right words.
— D.H. Lawrence
Good communication is stimulating as black coffee and just as hard to sleep after.
