How to Use Chaos for Inspiration

Happy Spring! Or is it?

March may be the month that welcomes spring, but the country’s temperature isn’t warming. The news is downright chilling. Given the chaos, is it possible to create? Yes, indeedy! Some say it’s the best time to generate new work. At the very least, unleashing your creativity will help calm your body, mind, and spirit—which is not nothing.

Listed below are some suggestions for creating during chaos.

Use Chaos as Inspiration

  • Let the madness fuel your creativity. Any kind of art can be an outlet for processing emotions, telling stories, or making sense of disorder.

  • Some of the most raw, impactful works are created in response to personal or societal chaos.

  • Freewriting (stream-of-consciousness writing) can help process overwhelming situations. The same goes for painting large splashes on the page.

Set Small, Manageable Goals

  • Break up your writing, art, music, building, cooking, and other creative endeavors into tiny tasks and try working in short bursts.

  • Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment to write or create art—embrace the mess and work with what you have.

Embrace Imperfection

  • Let go of the idea that your work needs to be polished immediately. Create first, refine later.

  • Experiment with raw, expressive forms that match the chaos you’re experiencing.

Create an Inspired Refuge

  • If possible, carve out a small, quiet space or use noise-canceling headphones.

  • If physical space is limited, create a mental refuge—listen to calming music or take deep breaths.

Create for Yourself First

  • Don’t worry about making something "good" or "meaningful" right away- just play

  • Art made for personal expression often becomes the most powerful

Rest and Reflect

  • If chaos is overwhelming, take breaks. Sometimes, stepping away from creating helps ideas develop in the background.

  • Engage with other art forms (music, film, poetry) to stay inspired

Instead of the chaos, focus on creating art, music, writing, and good food. Creatives emerge stronger and build an inspired world.

Quotes for the Soul!

Art is the triumph over chaos.
— John Cheever.
Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.
— Thomas Merton
I know the world is bruised and bleeding, and though it is important not to ignore its pain, it is also critical to refuse to succumb to its malevolence. Like failure, chaos contains information that can lead to knowledge—even wisdom. Like art.
— Toni Morrison
Tyranny cuts off the singer’s head
But the voice from the bottom of the well
Returns to the secret springs of the earth
And rises out of nowhere through the mouths of the people
— Pablo Neruda
