Nuts and Bolts: How to organize a creative space

It’s school supply time! I don’t know about you, but nostalgic smells of pencil shavings, erasers, and new notebooks spark my energy to organize and create.

A writer’s organization is done through notebooks and computer files, but when it comes to art, a system is needed to keep supplies from getting lost. A method that works will give you the space and ability to unleash more creativity.

Giving pens a place, other than the bottom of one’s backpack, can help establish a better system for creative practice.

Listed below are a few suggestions to create an organized, creative space.

Room Setup- Most folks don’t have a studio, but you can create temporary art spaces that will do the trick. I often set up at the kitchen counter. A bedroom floor or a fold-up table also work. Make sure you have good lighting, and don’t forget to crank the music.

Storage- Separate your supplies. Nothing’s worse than having to rummage through an overstuffed crate, searching for a specific pen. Tupperware containers will work, but getting more creative with your bins is fun. I’ve found eclectic tubs and baskets at garage sales. Reuse is better for the environment, and how fun is it to fill an old Scooby Doo lunch box with supplies? Cardboard boxes work, too- paint them with sparkles and spruce them up!

Labeling- Buy labels to stick on your bins or use tape and a Sharpie. Labels will save you loads of time.

Inspiration Board- Create a visualization board with photos and mementos that inspire, helping you get into a creative flow zone.

Clean and Declutter- It’s essential to clean your area, but it’s equally important to set aside time to remove old papers, crusty paint, and dried markers from your space.

The key to an organized system is to develop an area that suits your process and helps you work efficiently. If you have zero room, consider joining an artist co-op or a maker space.
